Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-09
This Privacy Policy describes how Find Land Surveyor, operated by Nathaniel Peters, an individual residing in the Province of Quebec, Canada ("we", "us", or "the directory") collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information through findlandsurveyor.com (the "Site"). It is written to comply with Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector as amended by Law 25, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA (CCPA), and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), to the extent each applies.
If you do not agree with this Policy, please do not use the Site or submit any request through it.
1. Person in charge of personal information
In accordance with section 3.1 of Quebec's Law 25, we have designated a Privacy Officer responsible for ensuring compliance with this Policy and applicable privacy laws.
Privacy Officer: Nathaniel Peters
Email: [email protected]
Jurisdiction: Province of Quebec, Canada
You may contact the Privacy Officer at any time to exercise the rights described in Section 9 below or to ask any question about this Policy.
2. Personal information we collect
We collect personal information in the following ways:
2.1 Information you provide through the estimate request form. When you submit a request for an estimate from a licensed land surveyor, we collect: your name, email address, telephone number (if provided), property address, project type and timeline, and any additional details you choose to share.
2.2 Information you provide if you are a surveyor. If you claim a profile or contact us as a land surveying firm, we collect: your name, business name, business email, business phone, business address, professional license number, and any business information you choose to publish on your profile.
2.3 Information collected automatically. When you visit the Site, our hosting and analytics providers automatically collect limited technical information including: IP address, browser type and version, referring URL, pages visited, time spent on each page, device type, and approximate geographic location derived from IP. This information is collected through standard server logs and privacy-respecting analytics.
2.4 Cookies and similar technologies. The Site uses a small number of strictly necessary cookies to remember your preferences. We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking pixels, or social media trackers.
2.5 Information from public sources. Surveyor business listings on the Site are compiled from publicly available state licensing board records and public business directories. We do not collect personal information about consumers from public sources.
3. Purposes of collection and use
We collect and use personal information only for the following specific purposes:
- To route your estimate request to one or more licensed land surveyors serving your requested area, so they can contact you to discuss your project and provide a price quote.
- To send you transactional confirmations related to a request you have submitted (for example, to confirm your request was received).
- To respond to questions, corrections, or support requests you send to us directly.
- To operate, secure, and improve the Site, including detecting fraud and abuse, debugging errors, and measuring aggregate usage.
- To comply with legal obligations, respond to lawful requests from authorities, and enforce our Terms of Service.
We do not use your personal information for advertising, profiling, automated decision-making, or any purpose unrelated to those listed above.
4. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)
If GDPR applies to you, our legal bases are: consent (for submission of an estimate request), performance of a contract or pre-contractual steps (for routing your request to surveyors), and legitimate interests (for security, fraud prevention, and basic Site analytics, balanced against your rights).
5. To whom we share personal information
5.1 Licensed land surveyors. When you submit an estimate request, we share the contents of that request (name, contact details, property location, project information) with one or more licensed land surveyors operating in the geographic area you specified, so they can contact you to provide a quote. We share your information only with surveyors who appear in our directory and who have been matched against publicly available state licensing records. We do not sell your information.
5.2 Service providers. We use a small number of third-party service providers to operate the Site:
- Cloudflare (United States) for site hosting, content delivery, and basic security.
- Email service providers for transactional confirmations and routing of estimate requests.
- Mapbox (United States) for address auto-complete on the estimate request form.
These providers process information only on our instructions and are bound by their own privacy and security commitments.
5.3 Legal disclosures. We may disclose information when required by law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of the directory, our users, or the public.
5.4 We do not sell your personal information within the meaning of CCPA or any other privacy law, and we do not share your personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
6. Cross-border transfers
The Site is operated from Quebec, Canada. Some of the service providers listed in Section 5 above are located in the United States. The licensed land surveyors who receive your estimate request are typically located in the United States, in the area you specified.
In accordance with section 17 of Quebec's Law 25, before transferring personal information outside Quebec we have considered the following factors:
- the sensitivity of the information,
- the purpose of the transfer,
- the protection measures the recipient is required to apply, and
- the legal framework applicable in the destination jurisdiction.
We have determined that the transfers described in this Policy provide adequate protection in light of these factors. By submitting an estimate request, you acknowledge and consent to these transfers.
7. Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes for which it was collected:
- Estimate request data: retained for up to 24 months after submission, after which it is deleted or anonymized. This period allows us to respond to follow-up questions and to investigate any complaint or dispute.
- Surveyor profile data: retained for as long as the profile is active, plus a reasonable period after account closure to comply with legal obligations.
- Server logs and analytics: retained for up to 12 months and then aggregated or deleted.
- Correspondence with us: retained for up to 36 months unless needed longer for a specific reason such as a dispute or legal hold.
You may request earlier deletion at any time using the contact details in Section 9.
8. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information against loss, theft, unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use, or modification. These include encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls on backend systems, and limited human access to your data on a need-to-know basis. No method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
If we become aware of a confidentiality incident posing a risk of serious injury to affected individuals, we will notify the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec (CAI) and affected individuals as required by Law 25, and any other authority required by applicable law.
9. Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Right of access. You may request confirmation of whether we hold information about you, and a copy of that information.
- Right of rectification. You may request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Right to withdraw consent. You may withdraw consent for any processing that relies on consent. Withdrawal does not affect processing already carried out.
- Right of deletion / erasure. You may request deletion of your information, subject to limited exceptions where retention is required by law or to defend a legal claim.
- Right to data portability. Under Law 25 and GDPR, you may request a copy of your personal information in a structured, commonly used, technological format.
- Right to deindexation (Law 25). Under section 28.1 of Law 25, you may request that we cease disseminating your personal information or that hyperlinks be deindexed where dissemination would cause you serious injury that outweighs the public interest in the information.
- Right to object (GDPR). You may object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
- CCPA rights. If you are a California resident, you have the rights to know, delete, correct, limit use of sensitive personal information, and not be discriminated against for exercising any privacy right.
To exercise any right, contact our Privacy Officer at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days (or such shorter period as required by applicable law). We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a privacy regulator: the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec (cai.gouv.qc.ca) for Law 25 matters; the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca) for PIPEDA matters; the California Privacy Protection Agency (cppa.ca.gov) for CCPA matters; or your local data protection authority for GDPR matters.
10. Children
The Site is not directed to children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact the Privacy Officer and we will delete it promptly.
11. Do Not Track and global privacy controls
Some browsers transmit "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. Because we do not engage in cross-site tracking or behavioural advertising in the first place, these signals do not change our practices in a meaningful way. We honour GPC signals as a request to opt out of any "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for the purposes of CCPA, even though we do not engage in such activities.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated through a notice on the Site or, where appropriate, by direct communication. Your continued use of the Site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
